Cloud native architecture for Toyota Xplorewood

With a cloud-native architecture, Toyota delivers a cohesive front-end application and a consistent customer experience across all European dealers.

Toyota, one of the world's largest and most renowned car manufacturers, employs over 360,000 people globally. Innovation is central to their operations: they utilize cutting-edge technologies to continuously enhance their vehicles. With approximately 10 million vehicles produced annually, Toyota's commitment to improvement is evident.

A unified front-end application for all Toyota's European dealers

To provide a consistent customer experience across all their European dealers, Toyota recognized the need for a unified front-end application. With a vast network of dealers throughout Europe, Toyota sought a standardized software toolset to ensure uniformity. This requirement led to the development of a cohesive front-end solution for the entire region. Achieving this necessitated a robust European service and data foundation, best accomplished through cloud native development and a cloud native architecture.

Development of a unified cloud native application

To tackle this extensive project, we assembled over 50 consultants into specialized teams, each consisting of cloud-native developers, testers, business analysts, and a product owner. A delivery manager and cloud native solution architects were appointed to oversee the coordination between teams and ensure seamless integration with Toyota's enterprise architects.

The teams adopted an agile approach, allowing for continuous enhancements based on feedback from Toyota's business units, customers, and dealers.

The project was ambitious and spanned several years. To address the diverse needs, we provided teams focused on a range of services:

  • Product services: Management of all marketable products.
  • Component services: Information on individual vehicle components.
  • Used car services: Facilitating the buying and selling of used cars by dealers.
  • Vehicle services: Data on operational Toyota vehicles, including mileage and maintenance information.
  • Dealer services: Comprehensive details on all available dealers.

Cloud native technologies used

To accomplish this extensive task, we not only used many team members, but also many cloud native technologies:

  • Cloud services: Amazon Web Services (AWS)
  • Compute & networking services: EC2, Load Balancing, Lambda, EKS
  • Databases & storage: RDS, DynamoDB, Elasticache, S3
  • Other: Step functions, Cloudfront, SQS, SNS

Uniform service and data foundation through a cloud native approach

The project, completed over several years, has delivered outstanding results. We established a uniform service and data foundation that enhances the experience for both dealers and customers. Leveraging a cloud native architecture allows for seamless scalability and expansion of existing services.
